THAMANKADUWA DIVISIONAL SECRETARIAT DIVISION

 Of 07 Divisional Secretariat Divisions located in the adorning Polonnaruwa District in the Rajarata Puraya in the beautiful Sri Lanka, the Thamankaduwa Divisional Secretariat Division enriched with historical background as well as pride, bounded on the North by Lankapura and Hingurakgoda Divisional Secretariat Divisions, on the East by Dimbulagala and Welikanda Divisional Secretariat Divisions, on the South by Matale District beyond the Mahaweli river and on the West by Elahera and Hingurakgoda Divisional Secretariat Divisions.

There are world famous Polonnaruwa Watadagaya and Perakum Statue including shrines, the longest river Mahaweli Ganga that creates self-sufficient in every aspect of Sri Lanka and the giant Perakum Samudraya Lake in the division which has been forwarding towards development with perfectness particularly in the fields of education, economy, culture and infra-structure.

The administrative town of the District is also located within the Thamankaduwa Divisional Secretariat Division wherein  all the district offices related to administration such as the Polonnaruwa District Secretariat (Kachcheri), Court Complex, Senior Superintendent of Police’s Office, District Elections Office, Royal Central College, tri-lingual school presently being constructed, the largest kidney hospital in South Asia presently  being constructed, Gallella Stadium District Agriculture Office etc.. Its extent is 446.3 Square Kilometers and population 87,465.

For the first time in the history of Polonnaruwa, Municipal council was established within the Thamankaduwa Divisional Secretariat Division and subsequently so far existed the Thamankaduwa Pradeshiya Sabha (Local Government institute) has been upgraded and    divided into Polonnaruwa Municipal Council and Polonnaruwa Pradeshiya Sabha respectively that have stepped into the Polonnaruwa development journey.

 Thamankaduwa History

Subsequent to the Anuradhapura regime, the Polonnaruwa Kingdom began since 1055 A.D. during which period it was very prosperous, self-sufficient and higher economical that was a golden era in the history of Sri Lanka. Kings like Vijayaba, Parakramabahu Great, and Nissankamalla and the queens like Leelawathi and Kalyanwathi ruled it. Latter part of it, the King Kalinga Magha took advantage of the then weak regime, in 1214 he came all the way from India invading the Polonnaruwa Kingdom. All the Viharas (temples) and buildings in Rajarata were considered to be the heart of Sri Lanka devastated by him. The inequitable and cruel this king destroyed the Polonnaruwa Kingdom that being considered as a golden era. Thereafter, the kingdom started to move towards the southern region.

The Thamankaduwa Division was most significant one during last Kandy kingdom of Sri Lanka. Even after, under rule of English regime in 1815, the Thamankaduwa Division was functioning as an unique administrative unit. In 1953, under the reforms of administrative limitation, the Polonnaruwa District was established. As a result both Thamankaduwa and Sinhala Patthuwa Divisional Revenues Officer’s Divisions were formed. In 1983, administrative divisions such as Thamankaduwa, Hingurakgoda, Lankapura, Medirigiriya and Elahera were further founded within the Polonnaruwa District.

Thereafter, in 1988, the administrative unit particularly Thamankaduwa Assistant Agent Division was expanded both Thamankaduwa and Dimbulagala. Under the 13th Amendment of the Constitution, so far existed Assistant Government Agent administrative unit has been turned into Divisional Secretariat Division. The Thamankaduwa Divisional Secretariat Division comprises 55 Grama Niladhari Divisions representing rural administration thus functioning in a mile stone in the distric
